AIMMM condemns the arrest of Abdur Rashid Agwan

New Delhi, Saturday, 14 September 2008: The All India Muslim Majlis-e Mushawarat (AIMMM) condemned the arrest this morning of known social activist Mr Abdur Rashid Agwan who among other things runs Universal Knowledge Trust [], an NGO working for the empowerment of the Muslim community through career counselling, social and rights guidance and by offering scholarships to hundreds of students every year. Mr Agwan has been a known figure of the Muslim community in Delhi for over two decades. He is involved with many NGOs in the country, especially in his home state of Rajasthan. Initial reports on local television channels have said that the Anti Terrorist Squads of Delhi and Maharashtra have arrested him on alleged suspicion of involvement in recent bomb blasts.

Dr Zafarul-Islam Khan, head of the AIMMM, the umbrella body of Indian Muslim organisations, condemned this arrest and said that this is a clear sign that the conspiracy to malign the whole Indian Muslim community has now entered the next stage. Until now faceless and unknown Muslim youths were arrested on unproved charges of terrorism, now the emboldened security agencies have moved further up the ladder and will arrest Muslim leaders with clean image. These very agencies and their supporting chorus in the media, both of which have totally forfeited the trust of the Muslim community, play blind whenever Hindu terrorists are caught red-handed making bombs, most recently in Kanpur last month.

Dr Khan demanded that Mr Agwan should be set free forthwith unless the security agencies have something concrete against him. If they do have any such proof in their possession, they must share it with the Muslim leadership in the country.

Dr Khan, while condemning the bomb blasts that shook Delhi yesterday, asked the security agencies to meticulously probe all possible culprits including the beneficiaries from these blasts which, as a former chief minister has recently noted, take place at crucial timings that benefit a certain holier-than-thou party which has usurped the terrorism plank and wants to regain power at the centre at any cost just as it did earlier in the wake of post-Babri and post-Godhra riots.
